Choosing The Right Bass Lure For Underwater Springs

The temperature of underground spring water which is usually warmer than the lake water in winter, and cooler in summer, many times can mean very active bass. The unusual nature of springs absolutely must influence your bass lure selection.
The presence of extremely clear water very near a spring demands realistic bass lures. Long, slender minnow imitators offer a realistic representation of living bass forage in clear water. As spring water is spread into the lake, its influence diminishes. In winter, the closer to the source of the spring you're fishing, the clearer/warmer the water is likely to be. As you move farther from the source of the spring, use slower-moving, deeper-running and more visible bass lures. You should be using a clear or bone topwater lure or shallow-running minnow imitator near the source of the spring, a spinnerbait fished in the mid-depth zone where the water is stained, and a bottom running jig or plastic worm the farther from the spring, where the water becomes murky. As you move away from the spring and as the water becomes murkier, your bass lure colors should shift to darker and even fluorescent colors. Chances are that all the obvious structures on your local lakes such as the points, the weed lines, and the drop-offs, have been heavily fished by other bass anglers. The challenge to today's serious bass fisherman is to find places that haven't been exploited by your competition. Underwater springs can be bass magnets that have escaped the attention of many of your fellow fisherman. When you happen to find them, you might just tap into some of the most exciting, and rewarding, fishing of your entire life. But, you have to be paying attention, and select the proper bass lure to reap the rewards.
