Looking At The Fishing Reel

Certain things just go together naturally. In some cases, they can’t exist without each other. The fishing rod and the fishing reel are two such inseparable items. Unless, of course, someone wishes to tie string off of a stick like everyone does in the old cowboy films!

The world of the fishing reel is broken into several different families that exist on both the freshwater and saltwater side of the equation. There are spinning reels, fly reels, spincasting reels, and crank reels. The reason that a person may wish to have such a large variety of reels is because different kinds of fish will require different equipment to catch them.

There are a number of different companies that make these different reels as well. Diawa, Penn, Shakespeare are three different brand names that offer a fishing reel. Actually, they each offer a multitude of different reels and have done so for decades. Most of the major reel companies have stellar reputations that match their sales figures.

Now, one fishing reel that had huge sales figures, but a somewhat dubious reputation was the legendary Pocket Fisherman of the 1970’s. This was an 8 inch long rod and reel set (yes, 8 inches!) designed to make a fishing reel more portable. As silly as it sounds, the origins of the Pocket Fisherman are even sillier. Producer Ron Popeil (Yes, the same man of Showtime Rotisserie Grill infamy) came up with the idea after some little kid hit Ron in the head with a fishing pole at the airport.

Despite over a hundred years having passed since the inception and invention of the fishing reel, most modern reels follow the same basic design. Well, why spoil a good thing. The traditional reel does quite fine and doesn’t need any further redesigning. Long may it reign!
