Bass will bite on a lure or live bait. Catfish are bottom feeders and bite on non moving food. Try a piece of cheese on a hook about a foot below a sinker on the bottom. The stinker the bait the better the chance of catching a cat.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
catfish eat anything that smells good to them. that being said if to us it stinks bad they will probably like it. but if I have to fish for catfish (and it is not my cup of tea) I use kentucky fried chicken skin I cut it into 1 inch squares and put three or four on a hook. they seem to like it on every water i have used it in from so cal to ohio.

i fish for little blue gill or perch ,,,then hook them on the back by the fin with a big hook...they stat alive for a long time and big fish go for them...also use a weight to hold them closer to bottom with about12 to 16 inch lead or a trout line works great to same way
