powerbait is simply the best. i have used worms before, and once u add powerbait along with that worm, u keep getting trouts. now if the lake water is not very clear, u might want to try a bright, outstranding color like rainbow, pink, orange, or yellow. if the water is pretty clear, use green or any other color.
salmon eggs work very well too, u can get those as bait at shops also.
u can also try nightcrawlers, but if ur going only for trout i would suggest powerbait.

I've generally done well with a Hot Shot spoon, 1/4 or 1/8 ounce, casting from the shore. Try various depths -- in deep lakes in the Sierras, 45 seconds won't get it to the bottom -- and then wind it in just fast enough to get it to wobble.
Fish it with 2 or 4 pound test -- the thinner line lets you cast farther. When you hook up, play the fish gently, and if it's a bigger one, use a net to get it out of the water, rather than risking busting it off right there. I fish 2 pound test, and have never had problems with breaking off trout.
(If you're fishing from shore, you need enough weight to chuck it a long ways out. Phoebes, Super Dupers, and spinners just aren't heavy enough.)

Use any small spinner. Panther Martin, Blue Fox work great. If you want you can tip the hook with a small piece of worm. I usually use single "egg hooks" or other small hooks on an unweighted tiny gold spinner with some red beads and splitshot 8" up the line. You can also make your own spinner rigs for cheap by threading the beads and spinner parts on a thicker piece of line and hook with a swivel and a splitshot (you can get these at some tackle shops).
This is for brookies and rainbows, lake trout and splake you need to get down deeper most of the year.

A Panther Martin spinner just tie it on your line cast out and reel in.
Here is a pic of my favorite color of onehttp://www.troutlet.com/ProdImages/spinn…
