Well baits are one thing but I suggest you order the Hydra Fishing Lure I’ve caught 10 bass in under 20 minutes with that but it works for trout too, it also works for northern pike and muski. out of all my life in fishing I’ve never used a lure quite like this.
You need a 5 inch Shiner , ( kinda like a large minnow), for Bass fishing.
For trout fishing, canned yellow corn, nightcrawler (big earthworm), or (my fav), Berkely Trout Worms,(an artificial bait that looks & tastes just like a REAL nightcrawler, and you don’t get your hands all gooey from earthworm slime).
I’m not much of a bait fisherman, but , these have proven reputations.
If you want to get a real “thrill” you should take up Flyfishing or Lure-fishing. It is a true “Art-form”, and you don’t have to get your hands all gooey from bait!(lol)
There are lots of baits that work. My favorite for trout, especially in streams, are worms. Not the big crawlers, but smaller – like garden worms – and put a whole one on your hook. Many bait shops will sell “trout worms”.
Bass will also hit worms, but it’s not necessarily their favorite. Bass tend to like minnows better in my experience. The thing with minnows is you need a bucket, and you need to keep them alive. Bass also like the artificial bait & lures, but if you are not already set up with these, it can become costly.
If you just want to go out and have some fun, I would suggest grabbing a rod and buying a container of worms (unless you can dig some up yourself). If you’re fishing in a good spot, you will catch something!
Good luck
Sounds like ya’ just startin’ be out, if that be the case then for trout I’d try the ol Power Bait by Berkeley, it’s easy! There is a lot of other type baits, but responders to your question have already covered some. Small spinners such as Panther Martin and Blue Fox do pretty well and their not all that hard ta’ use. As for the Bass, I’d wait until Brandon, exert and or few others add their thoughts ; ). Have a goodin’…
if you wanna try ..get some flour, mix with egg yolk, add some corn starch, and some shrimp paste…
make it into a doughy paste ..and roll em into little balls … rig your hooks with this stuff and you should be doing aight..
My dad and I always used crickets when I was a kid. We’d get them in bags from the pet stores. They’re good because they kick for a while. Lately I’ve had a lot of success with nightcrawlers against cutthroat trout.
Trout love live worms. Rig them on ghang hooks, and you’re good to go. If the trout are stocked, Powerbait works well also. Again, gang hooks are a great way to present Powerbait.http://www.jrwfishing.com/gang_hooks.asp

We used minnow’s the other day, I actually caught a large bass on them. also, chicken liver (as gross as it is) works very well
