The Zebco 33 combo is by far the best combo for less them 30.

You can buy a decent rod and reel at anywhere not just at WalMart, a little bit better brand is Shimano and you can get a better deal on a Shimano rod and reel combo at a sporting goods store like Dick’s

Get a Zebco 33 combo. Shakespear and ugly stik are good too, but the Zebco is the most reliable. Probably cheapest, too. I got one on sale for $19. Use the other $10 to get a tackle box.

okay what you need for good quality is a Shakespeare brand. ugly stick poles are great for fishing if i were u i would go a little more to about 40 dollars so u know it will last and u no it wont snap on u when u have a big one. good luck

I agree with A. But I would also suggest a one piece rod. I think if the rod is in two piece it will reduce the feel when you get a hit.
Quality gear is almost always a plus. Spend a little more and you won’t regret it in the long run.

it all depends really
freshwater-you want a rather smaller pole thats very sensitive, (i would recomened the shakespear line)
saltwater-your looking for alittle bit stronger of a pole that can take some abuse, (i would look toward shimano or shakespear)
*try to stay away from those REALLY cheap poles that are like 8 bucks becasue i hear they dont last very long

The Zebco 33 Combo will be the best ~ http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… It is on sale at Wal-Mart right now for $19. How do i know? Because my dad had to replace his old rod and reel that got pulled in with the 33. It’s a good combo. I own the reel myself. I caught a channel cat on it two days ago and it did good. I have also caught Largemouth bass and bluegill with the same reel. No, buying a combo will give you more bang for your buck. Reliable companies that are cheap are either ZEBCO or Shakespeare.

The Zebco 33 combo is good. I grew up in Iowa fishing there, IL, and Minn with a 33. I caught a 5 1/2 pound Northern Pike on the 33.I was using about a 6 pound test mono line. The combo at Walmart is for light to medium casting and comes with ten pound test mono line. You can land bigger fish but have to be careful and wear them out. A landing net is best for big fish to get them when you have them near shore.

It is usually cheaper to buy a combo unless there is only one piece ( only rod or reel) on sale, at Wal-Mart there is a Abu Garcia, the combo is only $60 but the reel alone is $53 so you get the pole for only $7 when you buy the combo, for your age you should get a bait-casting combo, they are a little tricky to learn how to use at first but after a while you will get the hang of it.
